'Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself ‘ - Gail Devers
The end of the academic year is here now, this means the time has come where people have to make a decision, whether to continue with education or stop. One thing people need to remember is that university is not for everyone, don’t ever let someone put you down or make you feel worthless because you decided you don’t want to attend.
1,180 people dropped out of uni in 2014 due to mental health issues. University can get very lonely, it’s relatively easy for your mental health to be affected , so it’s beneficial to ensure ur interacting with people. Also, get involved in things as you could fall into the habit of not branching out and keeping to yourself, despite you going to the same uni with a countless amount of people. Although, If this does happen to you, your university will assumedly have things in place in order to support and help you through it so make sure you take advantage of these facilities.
When I first started university the view that I had on it was, what am I REALLY paying 9.2k for? £9,250 yearly, for what? I noticed things about uni that I was never told, for instance, I can literally work from home and teach myself - even though you’re not supposed to. Personally, all they did was throw a bunch of people into a cramped lecture hall or a class room for a seminar to sit down for 45 mins to an hr, while the lecturer is going through PowerPoint slides that they put online regardless. This is literally it. This is what I was paying for. It wasn’t a thing where I hated university it was more of I noticed that I fell into an unnecessary system just to be left with a huge amount of debt. They didn’t even provide books for the course or compulsory resources, or even pay for the trips they set up for us so where is this 9.2k going to. I needed to know because I was absolutely rattled.
In spite of this, it actually just depends on your career path, uni is great for those who want to go into, nursing, medicine, sciences etc but for creatives I would say don’t waste your time when you can get to where you want to be through other means, if anything university will push your progress back.
However, a degree is also highly respected where ever you go in the world and in addition to that it’s always great to have further knowledge about a subject and to be educated in general . It opens you up to a lot of opportunities and jobs, I'm currently studying English literature and Drama studies as a joint honours, and although these are the longest subjects ever I honestly do enjoy learning them.
If you do decide to go to uni I would say move away from where you live, university opens you to a new world, it’s a great experience and helps you prepare for the adult world as it is very independent. For some of us we literally go from living with our parents to cooking, cleaning, buying groceries for your accommodation by yourself, the transition can be a lot you just have to be able to adapt appropriately, with that being said don’t go wild and abuse the independence.
University definitely isn’t easy, it would be futile to attend uni just to have fun or to ‘ get away from ends’ because at the end of the day when you’re 30 and paying of your student loan the only one it’s going to effect is you.
If you result to not going university, consider other alternatives, there’s many options out there, apprenticeship, jobs, entrepreneurship? Research and find out what suits you best , if you wanna further your education go for it! If you wanna work go for it! Just make sure that what ever you choose it’s something you’re doing for yourself and not anyone else, we all have our own paths and journeys to take so we don’t have time to be living our parents dreams or doing something because society tells you to.
